The Punisher has been in prison many times, but he’s never orchestrated a prison break like this. Frank has trained and prepared some amateur inmates, who have executed his plans flawlessly and taken over the Hydra prison. But, opening the gates for the other innocent prisoners wasn’t enough for Frank. Before leaving, he wants to finish off some ‘loose ends’.
So far, Matthew Rosenberg has delivered great storytelling and this prison arc has been good so far. This story is compressed, action packed and very entertaining. This issue’s “main event” was the fight between Frank and Taskmaster. There’s great fighting scenes and great choreography between panels with both of the characters given respect by the writer and artists. This issue also has a big reveal when Zemo tells Jigsaw his plans for Frank, which catches Jigsaw by surprise.
Kudranski has probably drawn his best issue so far in my opinion. The fighting scenes were really good and all the details in the backgrounds and the dynamic between panels were superb. I just want to congratulate Kudranski for the design of the Taskmaster’s skull mask. It’s really impressive!
Antonio Fabela’s colors make Kudranski’s art shine even more, I really liked the tone imprinted into this issue and his coloring is as important as Kudranski’s art, giving life into the scenes and characters.
Greg Smallwood’s quality covers are amazing and so far there hasn’t been a cover that didn’t meet expectations. This cover perfectly portrays what The Punisher has been doing with Hydra since the beginning of this run.
Overall Verdict: My speech is almost the same in every issue, despite the story being different. Rosenberg is doing a phenomenal job with The Punisher. With nine issues in this run plus eleven more from the War Machine Legacy event nailing it, it’s easy for me to say that Rosenberg is the best writer we had since Garth Ennis. Rosenberg is a fan and he’s providing fan service. Kudranski and Fabela are getting better with every issue and in this issue they really nailed it as a team.
